‘It would be tough to guard’: Could Trae Young, LaMelo Ball coexist for Hawks?


Gary Clark has watched LaMelo Ball’s rise up close since the potential No. 1 draft pick was a freshman at Chino Hills (Calif.) High. Back then, Lonzo Ball and LiAngelo Ball were the main attractions at Chino Hills, but the talent the youngest Ball brother possessed was immediately apparent. In his first start as a freshman, LaMelo Ball, who stood at 5-foot-10 and hadn’t hit his growth spurt yet, scored 27 points and made five 3-pointers.

Clark has been a volunteer coach at Etiwanda High, a rival of Chino Hills’, since 2002. He developed a relationship with the Ball’s patriarch, LaVar, through basketball and ended up coaching LaMelo Ball last summer on his Drew League team, No Shnacks. Ball was named the league’s top rookie, but Clark went even further with his praise and called him a “once in a generation point guard.”
