‘It helps when your best player is your best person’: Extension shows Damian Lillard and the Blazers are made for each other


It was October of last season, just a handful of games into the Trail Blazers’ season, when Damian Lillard became a little edgy.

He had just finished his pregame warmup and in the back hallway of the Moda Center, we started talking about his legacy, his career path and his vision for making an impact in the community.

As can happen every so often with Lillard, his tone hardened.

As accomplished as Lillard has been in Portland — the awards, the honors, the winning — he has long harbored a feeling of being misunderstood or underappreciated. I’ve always found that certain chip of his odd, considering the Portland media regards him somewhere close to royalty, and fans worldwide adore and fawn over him. But underneath his easy smile and cool demeanor, that tone, that edge, festers. And on this night, it surfaced as we talked about his seven years in Portland.
