Instant grades and reaction: The Derrick Rose deal to Detroit


The deal: Derrick Rose agrees to two-year, $15 million deal to join the Detroit Pistons.

The Pistons have been hoping to find a better solution at point guard than the mercurial Reggie Jackson. As Jackson enters the final year of his contract, they may have found a very good short-term solution with the Rose signing. Rose had a resurgence under Tom Thibodeau and Ryan Saunders in Minnesota, making him look a lot more like the player who jumped to prominence rather than the one who broke down before our very eyes. Much of last year saw Ish Smith leading the charge for the Pistons in the second unit, and when Jackson was injured.

As long as Rose doesn’t regress in this next stop, his scoring and the pressure it puts on the defense should be a huge boost for the Pistons. Smith was great at setting everybody up, but often had to do a little too much scoring. Rose won’t set others up the way Smith did, but he’ll provide a great scoring punch off the bench…
