Inside the USC players’ letter that brought urgency to the Pac-12’s return


LOS ANGELES — The roots of the Pac-12’s return to the football field can be traced back to Amon-Ra St. Brown’s couch.

It may sound funny, but that’s where the seeds were planted. Two weekends ago, the star USC receiver sat there as he watched his brother Equanimeous’s Green Bay Packers play on the opening weekend of the NFL season. This was a day after the Big 12 and ACC opened their respective seasons and days before the Big Ten decided to return to the field.

“I was thinking to myself, like, you see all these games and we’re over here sitting on the couch,” St. Brown said. “I’ve never really done that in my life — watched a season while not playing. So I called Coach (Clay Helton) that Sunday and asked him, ‘What can we do as a team to try and possibly play this season?’ ”
