Inside the bubble: How Zion’s ‘real’ return rekindled the Pelicans’ hopes


LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Zion Williamson, at least one who actually resembles the real him, showed up at zero hour.

Williamson’s signature moment in this game his team absolutely, positively had to win, came with 9:40 left in the second quarter, when Pelicans teammate Lonzo Ball threw up a lob from near midcourt and Zion, racing down the left side, caught it in the air and slammed it home over Anthony Tolliver.

Staying signature, Zion’s legs swung up in the air as he hung on the rim, like he’s done on so many lobs from Ball, et. al, all season. It was the first play since the NBA resumed play here at Disney that Zion truly looked like himself.

More important than any single play, though, was that for the first time in three games, the No. 1 overall pick with planet-shifting size and skill, was able to be on the court when the game ended. And even more crucial than that, for the first time at Disney the Pelicans won, beating the Memphis…
