Earlier this month, a gunman killed nine people and injured nearly thirty more in Dayton, Ohio. The shooting, the two hundred and fifty-first mass shooting in the United States this year, took place within hours of an even deadlier mass shooting, in El Paso, Texas. As Dayton reeled, its mayor, Nan Whaley, was suddenly rocketed into prominence as both a spokesperson for the city and a figure in the national conversation about gun violence. Paige Williams, who met with Whaley after the shooting, joins Eric Lach to discuss the role of local officials in times of national tragedy.
