‘In terms of being a leader, I failed’: Kyrie Irving takes an important first step toward reviving his career with Nets


The first step to reviving your career is admitting you were the problem.

“I failed those guys,” Kyrie Irving said, referring to last year’s disappointing season with the Boston Celtics. “I didn’t give them everything I could have during that season.”

In Irving’s first public comments since signing a free agent contract with the Brooklyn Nets in July, his 20 minutes at the podium started to resemble a therapy session disguised as an introductory press conference.

Irving talked about family, his pursuit of happiness and even weighed in on Kevin Durant’s last days in Golden State by blaming the Warriors for pressuring Durant into playing in Game 5 of the NBA Finals. For the record, Durant has said that the decision to play was his. Plus, Durant’s ruptured Achilles and the events leading up to the fateful day in Toronto has been dissected and analyzed for a few months now.

Irving, meanwhile, had yet to address his departure from Boston…
