In Ravens’ stunning upset, Chiefs toss and fumble away another victory


BALTIMORE — Clyde Edwards-Helaire removed himself from the pile, stood up and, knowing the game’s expected outcome, made the loneliest walk back to the Chiefs’ sideline.

A few feet from Edwards-Helaire was superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, his hands on his helmet in disbelief. In front of Edwards-Helaire was coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, each man staring at their young running back with disappointment. Surrounding Edwards-Helaire was a raucous crowd inside M&T Bank Stadium. More than 70,000 fans screamed in jubilation after referee Clete Blakeman used his right arm to signal that the Baltimore Ravens recovered the game-clinching fumble to complete their thrilling 36-35 comeback victory over the Chiefs, the team that has tormented them the past three seasons.

“Dude made a good play,” Mahomes said of Odafe Oweh, the Ravens’ rookie outside linebacker who forced Edwards-Helaire to fumble the ball for the first time in his two-year career. “He was getting blocked, he threw his (right) hand out and hit it directly on the ball.”

When the Chiefs’ final offensive play began Sunday night, the game’s outcome appeared to be headed toward another Kansas City victory, another prime-time classic in which Mahomes outdueled
