Impressive Celtic finally look like a team with a tactical plan. Now they just need some extra quality

Just as he did at Ibrox in Celtic’s 1-0 defeat to Rangers in January, Nir Bitton killed the momentum and cost his team. He stupidly got touch-tight to the player receiving the ball and had to desperately drag them down after they turned him, and then he stupidly reacted to a Midtjylland’s player’s goading by poking his forehead.

As he did on a number of occasions last season, Vasilis Barkas killed the momentum once more in the second half with a pitiful attempted save to keep out Evander’s free-kick, once again letting the air out of the tire of Celtic’s momentum. Both these mistakes went beyond frustration into something deeper and more melancholic. They felt like the relentless misery of last season was overstaying its welcome in what should be, and for the majority of the game was, an exciting new dawn.
