Budget projections in Idaho currently have the Idaho State Racing Commission falling short of enough funding for the 2021 racing season, reports kmvt.com. The state is expecting to host 26 dates of live racing across six different racetracks this year.
Horse racing in the Idaho is funded by wagering revenue, which is split between the commission, racetracks, breeders and public schools. The East Idaho Horsemen’s Association drafted multiple revisions of a revenue redistribution bill, but Rep. Brent Crane, R-Nampa — chairman of the State House Affairs Committee — refused to have the bill heard.
“It’s about safety. It’s about safety for the animals and it’s about safety for those who ride those animals: the jockeys,” East Idaho Horsemen’s Association President Bryon Goody told kmvt.com. “It’s about integrity for the sport. It’s about knowing that we’re doing the right thing. The racing commission is the governing body. It’s the watchful eye over the sport. It makes people accountable.”
