‘I always feel like I’m on fire’: Trae Young’s quest to be All-Star can carry Hawks


DETROIT — A few hours before the Hawks’ season-opening 117-100 win over the Detroit Pistons, Trae Young and Vince Carter had a conversation about what the sophomore wants to accomplish this season. One of the goals Young told Carter about was how he wants to be an Eastern Conference All-Star this season.

Carter told Young if being an All-Star is one of his goals, he needs to prove himself as an individual and also make the Hawks better.

Lloyd Pierce planned to take Young out of the game with four minutes left in the first quarter, but he couldn’t. Much like what Carter did for a few minutes against the New York Knicks in preseason, once someone is hot, the game plan is paused, and you just sit back and let that player cook.

But what impressed Pierce about Young’s first-quarter start was his momentum was all within the offense. Nothing was forced and out of rhythm. He was able to get off the ball and make plays for others. He was rolling,…
