Hyzon Motors Sells Fuel Cell Trucks To Dutch City

Hyzon Motors has received an order to make 15 hydrogen fuel cell trucks and vans for the city of Groningen, the Netherlands, the company said today.

Based in Rochester, N.Y., Hyzon makes buses, medium-duty trucks and semi tractor-trailors powered by hydrogen fuel cells. Advocates of hydrogen fuel cells boast that they are cleaner than electric vehicles, because its only byproducts are oxygen and water.

Hyzon has begun manufacturing 10 medium and heavy-duty trucks and five vans at Hyzon Motors Europe, a joint venture it has formed with Holthausen Clean Technology in the Dutch city of Holthausen.

Groningen previously bought 10 fuel cell vehicles from Holthausen Clean Technology, The city has set a goal of eliminating all carbon emission in the core city by 2025 and throughout the entire city by 2035. The city, which is located about 180 kilometers (114 miles) northeast of Amsterdam, is known as the “energy city” of the Netherlands.

Over more than a decade, Groningen has invested in sustainability measures, including refurbishing public buildings, energy-efficient street lights and alternative fuels to power vehicles in the municipal fleet.

“We’re proud to provide zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell vehicles to the municipality of Groningen as they decarbonize their fleet and aim to go zero carbon,” said Craig Knight, Hyzon co-founder and CEO, in a statement.

In February, Hyzon announced it would go public through a merger with Decarbonization Plus Acquisition Corp. A special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC, is an entity with no commercial operations formed exclusively to raise capital through an initial public offering of shares in another company with strong potential to grow substantially.

That deal will provide Hyzon up to $636 million and values the combined companies at $2.1 billion. Underwriters include existing and new investors such as BlackRock
