How To Thrive As An Entrepreneur While Earning A Doctoral Degree

Earning your doctorate and owning a business might seem like an impossible feat to achieve, but it is possible to do both simultaneously. Learn how these entrepreneurs are managing to balance learning and entrepreneurship at the same time.

When you are taking the first step towards your career, you will notice that some people are inclined to lean towards entrepreneurship, and want to explore the idea of working for themselves rather than attend four to six years of college. Others may put education first before entrepreneurship or may choose more of a traditional path.

However, some individuals want to run a business and pursue advanced study concurrently.

The idea of working hard towards earning a Doctorate Degree can involve many late nights, teaching requirements, and writing a dissertation while also tirelessly running a business. Although this idea might sound overwhelming, several aspiring doctoral-candidates and entrepreneurs are doing it.

Have you ever wondered how you could be someone who achieves what many perceive as the seemingly unachievable?

Here are three stories of successful entrepreneurs who have earned a doctorate while building their brands and running a business.

Adam Nessim—The Premed Consultants

Students who are trying to make it in the healthcare industry don’t have it easy.

Anyone who has ever graduated from medical school will tell you that students have a long, arduous path ahead of them. Not only is it hard to excel in medical school, but it is can be a great challenge to get into the right institution in the first place.

Adam Nessim is one such medical student. He knows all too well that it took more than dedication and intelligence to achieve a high score on his MCAT, and land him into the school of his dreams.

What makes Nessim different from many other medical school students is that he also runs also a thriving business alongside his studies.

However, Nessim has learned a lot from juggling his coursework, clinics, and business. Nessem stated, “If you have plans to start a business while also earning a doctorate, it can’t be about the money. You need to be so passionate about building your business, and this is where you should want to spend all of your free time.”

So how does one balance school and business?

Nessem mentioned, “Working on my business, The Premed Consultants is what I chose to do whenever I had a second of downtime from medical school. Building out my program, networking, and teaching students—this is what I love most.

Instead of unwinding after a long day at the hospital with Netflix, I worked on my business. It is also essential to know when to step back and return focus to your studies. Effectively managing my time is a skill I had to optimize to work towards earning a doctorate and building a business.”

Stephen Smith—Agape Nutrition

Another well-known doctor and entrepreneur is Dr. Stephen Smith.

An integrative physician, Dr. Smith was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia in the 1980s, around the time he graduated with his MD.

At the time, he and others he worked alongside in the medical field had little to no information on effective and efficient Fibromyalgia treatments. It is still somewhat of a mysterious condition today, due to its auto-immune qualities. When Dr. Smith was first diagnosed, he treated his condition with traditional medicine, since the medical field had little to no synthetic treatments for it.

It was at that time when Dr. Smith began his journey into practicing alternative and integrative medicine. He soon discovered his case was not a particularly unique one. Other physicians he met at integrative medicine conferences also experienced similar health conditions with little to no effective synthetic remedies.

Despite his own health making work challenging, Dr. Smith persevered with learning more about integrative treatments and running his medical clinic, eventually achieving remission with his Fibromyalgia.

Now, he operates Agape Nutrition, a website that sells professional-grade nutrition products.

When asked about his thoughts on surviving and thriving as an entrepreneur while getting through medical school, and dealing with his health problems, Dr. Smith stated, “Count the costs of both time and quality of life. Remember that you are taking your time from something else—whether it is business or family—with each choice you make to do something else. Make it worth it. Be selective about what you do. The time blocking method of allocating time and keeping priorities is excellent for keeping your time productive.”

Morissa Schwartz—Dr. Rissy’s Writing & Marketing

Dr. Morissa Schwartz is a talented wordsmith and entrepreneur, and a best-selling author and speaker who built a successful business empire while completing her Master’s in Communication and Doctorate in Literature.

Unlike Adam Nessim and Dr. Smith, Dr. Schwartz started her business before pursuing her doctorate, and her doctorate was ultimately in the liberal arts field, not medicine.

She found this issue posed unique challenges for her. She wrote and defended her dissertation while running two successful businesses, taking daily client meetings, and speaking at local and national entrepreneurship events.

While still in her twenties, Dr. Schwartz established herself as a leading entrepreneur and a successful writer.

While still a student, she founded GenZ Publishing, a company with published works by over 50 authors, several of whom are best-selling. She is also the founder of a digital marketing agency, Dr. Rissy’s Writing & Marketing.

New York and New Jersey rank her writing and marketing company as a top social media expert. Dr. Schwartz offers reliable advice on facing the trials and tribulations of studying for a doctorate while running two businesses.

Dr. Schwartz stated, “Carefully plan your goals and understand why you are doing what you are doing. Take the time to write out your goals as well. Ask questions such as: Why do you want to earn a doctorate? What do you hope to accomplish with your business?

It’s such a simple solution, but few people take the time to write down their goals. Having clear goals and whys will keep your motivation up and lead to long term success and clarity.”

Dr. Schwartz has tackled the topic of education and entrepreneurship in her nonfiction guide, Be A Digital Entrepreneur Today

Is it all worth it?

These three young established entrepreneurs are shining examples of how you can possibly run a thriving business while studying for a doctorate in medical school or the liberal arts. The journey is by no means an easy one, nor is it a short one
