How to Display Sentimental Items in Your Home

If you’re like so many others out there, you have photos, jewelry, collectibles, and maybe even some knick-knacks that are sentimental to you. Whether it’s an heirloom or just a reminder of a special someone or place, they’re treasured pieces of your life.

However, unless you have an abundance of living space, it can be a little perplexing when trying to figure out how to display them. In fact, a lot of you probably have special items hidden away in your sock drawer because you simply don’t have a place for it.

While your collection may never find its way to prominence in a Seoul gallery, there are some really cool ways that you can display those sentimental pieces in your home for all to see.

Your Cherished Photos

Photographs have been popular since their very inception, and you probably have at least a couple around the house that are framed. While the days of thick albums and shoeboxes busting at the seams due to an overabundance of photos are all but forgotten thanks to our handy smartphones and social media, many of us still have portraits and other pictures that we cherish.

For those that are extra special to you, consider transforming them into a photo blanket. Whether draped over the back of the couch or the guest room bed, it’s a perfect way to display a favorite picture. They also make great Christmas or birthday presents.

Your Small Collections

Have your dad’s pocketknife, mom’s badge from the fire department, or Grandma’s thimble? These and any other small sentimental items can look great when grouped in a mason jar and placed on a shelf for all to see.

Use Lights

From inherited Van Gogh paintings to your marriage license, you really want to show off most of your sentimental items. To do so, make sure to not depend on the common room or ambient lighting. Instead, make it pop.

While track lighting is still a popular way to show off wall art and photos, LED strip lights can enable you to be creative, light up specific shelves and cabinets, and completely control what gets a featured spotlight and what doesn’t.

A Shadow Box

While you can purchase them in all sizes, you certainly don’t have to be an award-winning architect to make a simple DIY shadow box. Plus, it’s the perfect way to display sentimental items. Whether it’s your son’s first baby blanket or your collection of one-of-a-kind figurines, customizing a shadow box allows you to make it for a specific spot with dimensions precisely suited to your needs.

An Oversized Frame

With a large picture frame, you can put your son’s first baby outfit and inked footprints next to his diploma and that college jersey that you love. Add in photos from throughout his life and you’ve got a panoramic view of your baby boy and the sentimental things that you’ve saved over the years.

Take Over a Room

If you have an unused or under-utilized room, consider turning it into a keepsake gallery. Install shelves or use bookcases to display small memorabilia and adorn the walls with cherished photos, the shadow box you made, and an oversized frame with your unique collage. Guest rooms are also ideal for this tip because you don’t have to take over a room completely.

Virtually everyone has at least one or two trinkets that they hold dear. Instead of relegating them to storage boxes or hiding them in a drawer somewhere, display those sentimental items and share their stories with anyone who asks.
