How Mariners prospect Zach DeLoach found a (bat) path forward


As the hitting coach for the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod League, Brett Becker often watches video footage of the college hitters he’ll be working with each summer to give him an idea of what to expect. In 2018, when Becker got around to watching Zach DeLoach’s sophomore year at Texas A&M, something showed up right away, but it wasn’t exactly awe-inspiring.

“I watched him play a few times and thought that this kid has got a lot more in there,” Becker said. “He is not producing like he should produce.”

DeLoach hit just .200 his sophomore season, with nearly as many strikeouts (29) as hits (32). By the time he arrived in Falmouth, he was lost, and, worse yet, he couldn’t see a path to get better.
