Lot 127, a Holy Roman Emperor colt, leads the opening session of the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale, bringing €100,000 ($110,199).
Consistent trade throughout the first day of the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale produced a clearance rate of 86 percent, up eight points on last year. The average of €25,612 (US$28,221) and median of €22,000 ($24,242) increased by 2 percent and 10 percent on 2018. Total sales for the day amounted to €5,045,500 ($5,559,795) for 197 horses sold.
Top price honors of €100,000 ($110,199) went to Lot 126, a colt by Holy Roman Emperor. He was purchased by Mick Kinane on behalf of the Hong Kong Jockey Club.
“He is a lovely stamp of a horse and is by a stallion who does well in Hong Kong so hopefully he’ll be lucky,” said Mick Kinane.
Sold by The Castlebridge Consignment, the February-born colt is out of a Nayef unraced half-sister to the listed winner and Group 3 runner-up Mashaahead (In The Wings) and to Freemantle (Galileo), a three-time winner in Hong Kong.
Competition was fierce for Lot 226, a grey son of Dark Angel sold by Al Eile Stud. The bids rained in from Paddy Twomey, Anna Ross and Ed Sackville, but it was Sackville who emerged successful when taking the bidding to a concluding €90,000 ($99,179).
“The sale has been good to us and we have also been lucky with Dark Angel. This colt has a lovely page and is out of a highly rated mare”, said Sackville.
The first foal out of the Smart Strike mare Click And Roll (Lot 183) was bought by Eamonn Reilly of BBA Ireland for €80,000 ($88,155) from Rathbarry Stud. By Acclamation, the colt now heads stateside to go into training with top 2-year-old producer, Wesley Ward.
“He is out of a half-sister to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Hootenanny, whom Wesley trained, and he has been bought for a client of Wesley’s,” said Reilly, before adding: “I bought some yearlings last year, including a Kodiac filly from here, and they went out to Wesley’s. They have all won so we are hoping for a repeat”
Hootenanny, a son of Quality Road, won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, the listed Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot, and finished second in the G1 Prix Morny in France.
All yearlings cataloged and offered at the 2019 September Yearling Sale and Part II are eligible for the €300,000 ($330,582) Tattersalls Ireland Super Auction Sales Stakes 2020 (T&C’s apply).
