‘He’s been about this’: Why Jaylen Brown driving 15 hours to protest is who he is


Jaylen Brown wasn’t going to stand for it.

He was a freshman at UC Berkeley and he’d been awakened to the secret behind his class schedule — which featured three classes identical to that of fellow hooper Ivan Rabb, his teammate on the McDonald’s All-American squad before Cal in 2015-16. Hashim Ali, co-founder of the Oakland Soldiers AAU squad who has three degrees from Berkeley and is working on a fourth, let Brown know he had a schedule designed to keep him eligible. But Brown wanted more. So he changed it.

He swapped out a class on oceans, one on English writing, and another. He added an African American Studies class with Hardy Frye, a former member of the renowned Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee during the civil rights movement.
