Heartstopper Renewed for Two More Adorable Seasons at Netflix

Fans of schoolboy angst and rugby-themed flirting, rejoice: our latest romantic obsession is sticking around.

On Friday, Netflix announced that Heartstopper, the teen romantic dramedy based on Alice Oseman’s web comic and graphic novel of the same name, has been renewed for two more seasons. Though the streamer rarely renews live-action shows for multiple seasons at a time, Heartstopper has been an instant hit since its premiere in April — as evidenced by how quickly fans got “TWO MORE SEASONS” trending on Twitter, just hours after the announcement.

“We were overjoyed with the global reaction to Heartstopper and can’t wait to continue the story with two more seasons,” Oseman said, accompanying the announcement with a fully adorable sketch of the story’s lead characters, Nick and Charlie, played in the series by breakout stars Kit Connor and Joe Locke, respectively.

The show’s first season has already adapted the first two volumes of Oseman’s original comic, and will likely pick up the action with volume 3, which sends Nick and Charlie on a school visit to Paris — a trip Locke and Connor told Them they’re excited to make.

Though Heartstopper centers on the organic romance between its leads, as shy, bullied Charlie joins his school’s rugby team to get closer to his golden-retriever crush Nick in season one, the series’ diverse supporting cast has cemented its appeal for younger LGBTQ+ viewers. Characters like Tao (William Gao) and Elle (Yasmin Finney, who has booked a gig on Doctor Who) deepen Heartstopper’s themes of loneliness and need for community, emotions we’re all dealing with ever more frequently these days.

“For me, it’s just about celebrating queer joy,” Oseman told Netflix’s fan site Tudum last month. “Above all, I hope that it just makes people smile and brightens their day — but I also hope that it inspires, particularly, young queer people to believe that they can find happiness and find romance and find friendship.”

With two more seasons of cute, gay British snogging on our horizon, finding all that positivity feels a lot easier than it did yesterday. And, of course, there’s the potential of a Jennifer Coolidge cameo to keep us on our toes.
