Harpist Quiets Distressed Horses Displaced By Australian Wildfires

Carol Booth, who lives in New South Wales Mid North Coast, is a certified therapeutic harp practitioner who also owns horses. Her home is close to where a bush fire broke out; she was forced to move her horses to the Wauchope Showground to keep them safe.

One of Carol’s horses, Oscar, is blind and became distressed by the move. She decided to see if playing a harp would calm him. The horse settled while listening to Pachelbel’s Cannon and variations, no longer rearing and climbing the walls of the stall. While playing for Oscar, Carol noticed two other neighboring that had become agitated. The music from the harp seemed to soothe them, as well.

Carol typically plays her harp for patients in palliative care wards of rural hospitals. She’s completed the International Harp Therapy Program and an internship; the harp she played for the horses is a smaller version of what she typically uses in human therapy.

In addition to moving her horses to safety, Carol also had to move her harps.
