Greg, formerly the UK’s ‘loneliest degu’, finally finds love

Greg, the UK’s ‘loneliest degu’ is lonely no more.

Greg, three, has at last found love after dealing with a string of rejections from his fellow degus.

His companion Charlie sadly had to be put to sleep after the pair arrived at Blue Cross’ rehoming centre in Burford, Oxfordshire, in November.

Degus are sociable critters who do not like being kept on their own, so when Charlie died, Blue Cross tried to set Greg up with two others of the species.

Greg’s path to true love sadly wasn’t a smooth one, and even though he was keen on them, they did not feel the same way.

However, following a Valentine’s Day appeal, Natalie Curry read about Greg’s struggle to find love and offered to try matching Greg with her own lonely degu, Sophie.

‘We were looking for a new partner for our degu Sophie as she lost her partner last year to old age and had become depressed,’ said Natalie, who lives with her partner Jordan Hubbard in Cheltenham.

Natalie said she was looking for ‘the perfect match’ for Sophie, so did not want to rush the process.

She applied to adopt Greg and says that ‘he and Sophie are very much in love’ since they moved in together.

Hannah Wiltshire, rehoming manager at Blue Cross Burford, said: ‘Degus, like many small animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs, really don’t cope well on their own.

‘We had noticed Greg was very subdued after losing his companion, so we’re delighted to have found him a new love and to see him and Sophie getting on so well together.’
