Giants become first team to clinch 2021 playoff spot

The San Francisco Giants are the first team in baseball to clinch a 2021 playoff spot with their 9-1 win over the San Diego Padres on Monday.

San Francisco jumped to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning thanks to Tommy La Stella‘s solo shot and Evan Longoria‘s three-run home run. The club added three more runs in the fourth after Mike Yastrzemski and Brandon Belt each homered.

With the victory, the Giants extended their winning streak to eight games and punched their first ticket to the postseason since 2016. The team has an MLB-best 94-50 record, guaranteeing them at least a spot in the National League Wild Card game.

San Francisco has a three-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West and is looking to win its first division title since 2012. The Giants have 18 games remaining in their regular-season schedule.
