Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has called on referee Jon Moss’ performance to be looked at after his side’s loss to Liverpool on Tuesday night.
Sadio Mane and Joel Matip’s goals saw Liverpool come back from a very early concession courtesy of Douglas Luiz to win at Villa Park — and keep the pace with Manchester City at the top of the table.
However, Gerrard was less than impressed with Moss, who was also jeered by the stadium’s Holte End.
“I hope Jon’s performance is looked at,” Gerrard said. “I don’t want to be sour — we’ve lost the game and I don’t want to cover over any cracks — but I just hope it’s looked at.”
When Gerrard was told Moss was retiring at the end of the season, the 41-year-old replied: “Is he? Good.”
Jurgen Klopp, meanwhile, insisted his side would pursue City until the end of the season. He said: “We are still chasing like mad… we don’t waste energy really to think ‘hopefully they lose’. No, we just know we have to win, that didn’t change at all. Now we have to recover.”
Villa are 11th in the Premier League after Tuesday’s loss.
