Gameday: U.S. Faces Switzerland in Final Preliminary-Round Contest


GAME ONE RECAP

Thanks to a three-goal first period and a hat trick from Isaac Howard (Hudson, Wis.), Team USA opened the 2020 Youth Olympic Games with a 7-5 win over Finland. Ten skaters tallied points in the game and three players recorded multi-point efforts in addition to Howard’s three-goal performance. Dylan Silverstein (Calabasas, Calif.) notched 23 saves in the victory. 

AGAINST SWITZERLAND

Team USA resumes its 2020 Youth Olympic Games slate against Switzerland. The two teams have never met in Youth Olympic Games competition. 

LOOKING BACK

The U.S. Youth Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team won gold at the 2016 Games in Lillehammer, Norway, going 5-0-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L), and defeating Canada, 5-2, in the gold-medal game.

FUTURE SUCCESS

Four members of the gold-medal winning 2016 Men’s Youth Olympic Team, including Ty Emberson (Eau Claire, Wis.), Jacob Pivonka (Naperville, Ill.), Mattias Samuelsson (Vorhees, N.J) and Oliver Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.), recently competed in the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship in Ostrava and Trinec, Czech Republic. The U.S. went 2-1-0-2 (W-OTW-OTL-L) to finish sixth at the tournament. Pivonka led the U.S. in goal-scoring while Samuelsson served as team captain.
