From hopeful to distraught to proud: The different emotions of Cutdown Day over the years


It’s cutdown week in the NFL and that still stirs up some emotions for me even though I haven’t had to actually live through it for 12 years. Believe it or not I’ll still feel a little pit in my stomach when I wake up on Saturday, the day in which NFL teams must have their rosters down to the mandated 53-man limit. It happens every year.

With that in mind I thought the best way to describe the highs, lows, and everything in between of what this week and especially that day are really like for players was to look at the different states of mind I found myself in during my career.

HOPEFUL (2001 & 2003) My rookie year in 2001 I felt confident that I had performed well enough that the Redskins would keep me in some capacity. I thought it would likely be on the practice squad or maybe even a “redshirt” year on Injured Reserve because I had both sprained my MCL and broken my hand during camp.  The funny thing is we were told to be in our hotel room from 8…
