Freeze frames: Alaskan methane bubbles – in pictures


Since 2010, Alaska-based photographer and artist Ryota Kajita has been capturing natural ice formations, which he first spotted while walking near a pond in the Arctic tundra.

These frozen methane bubbles form when temperatures drop below zero and gases floating to the surface are trapped. “Being absorbed in hunting for the bubbles and finding ice patterns is an uplifting activity, like treasure hunting,” he says
