Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has hailed Max Taylor as an ‘inspiration’ after teenager’s cancer recovery

  • Taylor has made it back and was an unused sub in United’s game on Thursday 

Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has hailed Max Taylor as an ‘inspiration’ after the teenager’s recovery from cancer.

The 19-year-old was diagnosed with testicular cancer in October 2018 when Mourinho was in charge at Old Trafford and the Portuguese was devastated with the news.

Following surgery and extensive chemotherapy, after the disease had spread to his lungs, Taylor has made it back and was an unused sub in United’s 2-1 Europa League defeat to Astana on Thursday night.

It was the defender’s first appearance in the senior squad and completes a remarkable story.

Taylor has spoken of Mourinho’s support following the initial diagnosis and the Portuguese’s heart is warmed by the outcome.

‘It was not me, it was everybody at the club, it was a big shock for us at the time,’ Mourinho, now in charge at Tottenham, said.

‘Very sweet kid, fantastic young professional and when we had the news, everybody was in shock, but I think the first one to motivate everyone at United was him.

‘I think he was the one that motivated all of us.

‘Lots of people, including myself, we tried to hide tears when we knew it. He was the one who motivated everyone, he was the one who was feeling strong, he was the one who was ready for this fight so that’s amazing, amazing, amazing news for the club and for all of us connected to him.

‘You know he won the biggest match of his career, so everybody is happy.

‘It is an amazing story and maybe an inspiration for other young people who will find a similar situation.

FROM BATTLING CANCER TO A POTENTIAL UNITED DEBUT, MAX TAYLOR’S CAREER TIMELINE

January 2018: The Manchester-born defender signs his first professional contract at United.

May 2018: Forms part of the United backline as they are crowned Under-18 Premier League Northern champions.

October 2018: Taylor is diagnosed with testicular cancer. Has surgery to remove left testicle on October 4.

November 2018: He starts an intense nine-week course of chemotherapy at the Christie Hospital in Manchester.

February 2019: United announce that Taylor has responded successfully to cancer treatment after undergoing chemotherapy.

March 2019: Having waited six weeks following chemotherapy, Taylor undergoes a five-and-a-half-hour operation to remove six swollen lymph nodes.

May 2019: Returns to the Aon Training Complex and begins the process of rebuilding muscle mass and fitness.

September 2019: Taylor starts training outside, joining in with his team-mates two weeks later.

October 2019: The 19-year-old returns to action as a first-half substitute in Manchester United Under-23s’ 4-1 win at Swansea.

November 2019: Taylor comes off the bench at Old Trafford as the Under-23s beat Sunderland 3-0. The centre-back is included in the first-team squad for the first time as United travel to Kazakhstan to take on Astana in the Europa League.
