For Washington’s Derrius Guice, a return to field was better later rather than sooner


People tend to take things for granted until something they love is taken away. When football was taken away from Derrius Guice, he was in a place where he was lost. His brothers were out on the field, and he wasn’t there after putting in so much work with them at training camp.

“It was kind of like a slap in the face,” Guice said, following his brief preseason action in the Atlanta Falcons game on Aug. 22.

In the same breath, it humbled him. He felt like it was a sign from God to slow down and watch his body, read his body and take care of it. Everything is a lesson; he said at the podium that day. Good, bad, or indifferent, there are always things to be learned from what happens to us in life.

“We always take things for granted, but it definitely matured me and slowed me down,” said the 2018 second-round pick from LSU.
