Palace kicks clear late in the Grade 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt at Saratoga on August 2.
D W Fitz dug in to win on debut on Delaware Park on July 24, becoming the first winner sired by Spendthrift Farm‘s multiple Grade 1 winner Palace.
Under jockey Trevor McCarthy, the bay colt prevailed as the post time favorite in the 5 1/2-furlong waver maiden claiming race by three-quarters of a length, stopping the clock in 1:07.36 over a fast main track. Jamie Ness saddled D W Fitz for his Jagger Inc., operation.
D W Fitz was bred in Kentucky by DW2 Equine, out of the stakes-winning Seattle Fitz mare Flirty Fitz.
Palace, a 10-year-old son of City Zip, stands at Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Ky., for an advertised fee of $6,000.
He won 12 of 30 starts during his racing career, earning $1,586,550. His most notable victories include the Grade 1 Forego Stakes and Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap, the G2 True North Stakes, the G3 Fall Highweight Handicap, and the non-graded Hudson Handicap (twice) and Chowder’s First Stakes.
Palace is out of the winning End Sweep mare Receivership, and he is a half-brother to stakes-placed Retriever.
