Fifth-round LB Cole Holcomb brings more athleticism to Redskins defense


The Redskins spent their second of two fifth-round picks on North Carolina linebacker Cole Holcomb. Holcomb doesn’t come with tremendous size, at only 6 foot 1, 231 pounds, but does offer tremendous athletic ability. He wasn’t invited to the combine, but reportedly impressed scouts at his pro day workout. After the draft, Redskins coach Jay Gruden spoke enthusiastically about Holcomb, singling out his performance against Georgia Tech.

Georgia Tech runs a Flexbone offense, which is based upon running the ball with various option plays and moving parts to disguise where the ball is going. It can be tough for a linebacker to diagnose and identify the intent of the play, but Holcomb finished the game with 12 solo tackles and 10 assists, for a total of 22 tackles, including three forced fumbles.
