Fernando Torres has made the first steps of what is hoped to be a fruitful coaching career with the former Spain international overseeing Atletico Madrid‘s B team. 

The World Cup winner hung up his boots in 2019, having dazzled in the Premier League with Liverpool and Chelsea, then returning to Madrid to play for Diego Simeone’s side before ending his career in Japan with Sagan Tosu. 

Torres, 36, moved back to the Spanish capital to take up a coaching role with the club in September 2020, where he has been making steady progress in his new career.

According to Marca, Torres worked as part of Ricky Alonso’s coaching staff, but on Wednesday El Nino took the reins for Atletico’s B team.

Players have been left astounded by Torres’ training sessions while he has also shown he can still mix it with the youngsters having taken part in drills with the squad. 

Atletico has an illustrious history of bringing through future stars, with Torres, David de Gea and Koke all developing through the club’s youth system.

Hopes are high for Torres’ burgeoning coaching career, and the Spaniard’s first game in charge takes place on Sunday afternoon at Poblense. 

Atletico B are in ninth place in their 10-team Segunda Division group, picking up just five points from their eight league games this season. 

Torres worked under some of the biggest names in world football, having been mentored by the likes of Vicente Del Bosque, Rafa Benitez and Jose Mourinho during his 18-year career.
