Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-Calif.) has issued a challenge to the sport of kings: Keep everyone safe at Breeders’ Cup or face extinction.
The Los Angeles Times reported Thursday that Feinstein sent a strongly-worded letter to the California Horse Racing Board suggesting that an equine fatality this weekend could result in attention from lawmakers on whether to continue allowing the sport.
“I believe this weekend presents a critical test for the future of horse racing in California and in the United States,” Feinstein wrote, per reporter John Cherwa. “If horse racing can not be conducted in a safe and humane manner that protects the life and safety of horses and jockeys, it may be time to reexamine the future of this sport in our state and in our country.”
On Oct. 27, a sixth horse died at the track since the start of the current fall meeting. The fall meet began Sept. 18.
