Father's Day Gift Guide: The Best Wines To Pair With BBQ And Grilled Foods

Father’s Day is often associated with distilled spirits, such as bourbon or cognac. But if your father really loves BBQ and grilled or smoked foods, there’s some wines perfect for everything from steaks to ribs.

Martha Stewart Wine Co. Great Wines for Grilling Pack

The summer is just getting started, and that means it’s a great time to stock up on the best warm weather wines for grilling. This 4-pack of Martha-approved wines ($70) were curated just for pairing with grilling, and includes 2017 Tesoro Vite Moscato d’Asti D.O.C.G., 2017 Racine Côtes du Rhône Rouge, 2018 Burke Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2018 Sierra Trails Old Vine Zinfandel.

Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2019

This New Zealand wine ($30)  is fresh and vibrant, perfect for if fresh oysters or other seafoods are going on the grill. It’s crisp and refreshing, so it’s a great daytime wine to enjoy outdoors on a sunny afternoon.

Trapiche Medalla Malbec 2016

Cookouts often involve hearty meats like ribs and steaks, and this Malbec’s ($22)  intense flavors of berries, plums, cherries, and raisins is perfect for all that meatiness. This wine has notes of ripe fruit against spicy and smoky wood, that will go great with smoked meats and but also cookout favorites like stew or chili.

Brooks 2018 Runaway Red Pinot Noir

Red wines have a reputation for being bold and full-bodied but they can also be light and fun. This easy-drinking Pinot Noir ($28) from Oregon’s Willamette Valley is both, it has an undeniable smooth finish that leads to easy (maybe too easy!) drinking, but it’s big and bold, perfect for those Father’s Day classics like burgers and steak.

Dobbes Family Estate 2017 Grand Assemblage Syrah

Syrah is known to be full-bodied and fruit forward, this Grand Assemblage Syrah ($30) from Oregon’s Rogue Valley would work great with chicken right off the grill. Its aroma is that of dark fruit, sweet tobacco, dried fig and vanilla.

Cedar Rose Vineyards 2016 Blaufränkisch

Add a touch of exotic to your dad’s summer wine collection. Blaufränkisch ($24)  is a medium-bodied dry red that is great with smoked and grilled meats because of its hint of spiciness, along with dark red fruits like plum.

Blue Apron Robust Reds 3-Pack

This is another great set of wines ($40) perfectly paired for grilling. Included in this package is a 2015 Vermillion Red Blend, which boasts an earthy smokiness. 2015 Château Grand Jean Bordeaux Supérieur, perfect for being paired with a big juicy steak. The 2016 Sans Liège is a fabulous Rhone Blend great with savory meats.

Outer Sounds Sauvignon Blanc

Another beautiful New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc ($17), this bright and crisp wine has ripe fruit flavors and will be perfect for anything from fish to a perfect light wine to start off the festivities of a great summer cookout.

2019 Joel Gott Central Cost Rosé

This 2019 Central Coast Rosé ($15)  is light and crisp, with aromas of strawberry, floral, and peach. Enjoy it with salads and cheeses as the grilling fun starts, but it’ll also go beautifully with seafood.

Mario’s Cabernet Sauvignon From Trinchero Napa Valley

This deep ruby wine ($60) has the sweet and savory flavors of black currant and blueberry that would be beautiful with a bacon cheeseburger, layered with thick-cut bacon and a good slice of cheddar.

The Online Wine Course

If your dad really enjoys pairing his wines with his grilling, he’ll probably love learning more about the wine he’s drinking. Especially if he’s sheltering in place this Father’s Day, it may be a fun idea to treat him to an online wine course. The Online Wine Course (originally $149, currently 50% off to benefit a charity)  is designed for the total wine beginner. Certified sommelier and wine expert Cristie Norman will teach the basics and more in 16 sections, complete with quizzes and a final exam. Those who successfully pass the program are rewarded with an official certificate and a pin to celebrate. That’s as fun as a gift gets!
