What happened in the game?

Raheem Sterling’s 57-minute goal gave England the win in their Euro 2020 Group D match against Croatia.

England were the better side for much of the match and almost went ahead in the opening 10 minutes as Phil Foden hit the post.

After a strong opening 20 minutes from Gareth Southgate’s side, the tempo of the game petered out and it wasn’t until the second half that another good chance was created. This time Sterling made no mistake, after he was played through by Kalvin Phillips.

In truth, Croatia failed to muster any attempts of note and it was England who came closest to adding to the scoring, with Mason Mount’s 67th-minute free-kick just dipping onto the roof of the net.
