Familiar script dooms South Carolina in season-opening loss to Tennessee

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina fans finally found some normalcy in 2020.

Their beloved team delighted and infuriated them, and in the end, disappointed them — this time in a 31-27 loss to No. 16 Tennessee to start a season delayed three weeks by the COVID-19 pandemic. Will Muschamp fell to 26-26 overall and 2-14 against ranked teams as the Gamecocks head coach.

“We put ourselves in position to win the game and didn’t get it done,” Muschamp said. “Give Tennessee credit. I told our team we were going to have seven- or eight one-score games this season. They are going to come down to two or three plays and decisions late in the game. You have to come out on top of those plays.”

The Gamecocks didn’t. New starting quarterback Collin Hill laid the blame for the outcome on himself and a first-half pick-six, even though he was under pressure and the ball caromed off Shi Smith’s shoulder before being intercepted.
