Falcons trade WR Julio Jones to Titans for second-round pick

His legacy in Atlanta

Tori McElhaney, Falcons beat writer: Jones’ legacy in Atlanta shouldn’t change just because a new regime came in and needed to make major cuts due to the salary-cap constraints Terry Fontenot and Arthur Smith inherited.

There may be some residual poor feelings left over between the Falcons and Jones because of how things ended, but in the long term it doesn’t change the facts. The fact is that regardless of what Jones does in Tennessee, he still spent the last decade in Atlanta. During said decade he became one of the greatest — if not the greatest — receivers in the modern football era. He did that with the Falcons, and that legacy will stand.

Evaluating the trade

Sheil Kapadia, senior NFL writer: This is a no-brainer move for the Titans. Jones is signed for three more years at an average of $12.8 million per season. That could end up looking like a bargain.

And it’s a low-risk move as well. Jones has $17.3 million guaranteed on his deal, so even if he looks like a complete disaster (unlikely) in 2021, the Titans can move on. And the upside is huge. Jones and A.J. Brown offer one of the most talented, physically-imposing wide receiving duos in the NFL.

It’s nearly impossible to see how you’re excited about this trade for the Falcons unless you wear a customized jersey that reads “Cap Space” on the back of it. Sure, they were in a tough situation if Jones wanted out, but you would have loved to see them massage the situation and field an exciting, high-upside offense in 2021.

And if they knew the situation with Jones was going to be untenable, then why not go all the way in on a full rebuild this offseason?
