Falcons’ defense finally shows up in the clutch to hold off Panthers


Raheem Morris was dejected as he took questions from the media following Sunday’s 23-22, last-second loss to Detroit. On Thursday night, following a 25-17 win over Carolina, the Falcons’ interim coach was almost giddy. Yes, the mood shifted with a win. But it also shifted for another reason: The Falcons’ two-minute defense finally showed up.

On Wednesday, we took a deep dive into the struggles of the Falcons’ two-minute defense. After charting every two-minute drive of 2020 (the end of the halves and games) we found that the Falcons had given up 54 points during those situations versus the 33 points Atlanta’s offense had scored during the same time. Prior to Thursday night’s win, those 54 points made up 26 percent of the points the defense had allowed through seven games. And that loomed large, considering four of those games had been decided by seven points or fewer (or in the case of the Dallas and Detroit games, one point).
