Fairmount Park has been approved to host 60 races dates in 2020, an increase from the 40 held at the Illinois track this year. Track president Brian Zander told St. Louis Public Radio that the additional dates will require the track’s purse account to run at a deficit.
“We’re going to pay it forward,” Zander said. “The purse is going to go into a deficit situation. On the basis, the management knows at some point that money will be coming in. There will be at some point, we don’t know when, there will be some casino and sports betting revenue coming into the track.”
The deficit could approach $2-$3 million by next year, said Zander, but once the Illinois casino gambling funds start coming in, Fairmount expects to be able to recoup the money.
