Fabio Fognini speaks out after heated telling off from Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal

Fabio Fognini has taken to Twitter to praise Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal for their coaching at the Laver Cup.

The Italian was beaten 6-1, 7-6(3) by Jack Sock in his only match of the tournament.

During that clash, Federer and Nadal engaged in a heated discussion with Fognini on the sidelines.

The legendary pair, who share 39 Grand Slam titles, offered stern advice to try and get Fognini playing better.

And the 32-year-old posted the video on his social media this afternoon with the caption: “No words needed. #tbt #lavercup #goats @rogerfederer @RafaelNadal @LaverCup.”

Federer was leading the coaching during the opening day’s play.

“New balls now ok, it is going to be pretty difficult, number one,” Federer told Fognini.

“Number two, I want no more negative. I want only positive. If you go back to return, you do it because you have good intention.

“If he hits a good forehand, ok, we respect it, maybe it was lucky it doesn’t matter. Believe in the good thing.

“You can not be frustrated and think something bad is going to happen or he gets lucky. Make him hit a great shot and we accept it and we keep going.”

Nadal also spoke in Spanish to the world No 11.

However, a frustrated Federer was not happy with how his advice came across.

“Bad coaching,” said the 20-time Grand Slam champion afterwards.

“It’s that simple. Terrible coaching before, during, and after.

“Maybe we said the right things afterwards, you know, to cheer him up again. But everything that led to the performance didn’t work.

“No, I think Fabio struggled, you know, just to shake off the nerves. That was my opinion. He tried, we tried, and honestly Jack started to play very well.

“Got to give that to Jack in that second set. He was able to keep Fabio uncomfortable, and we tried to get Fabio comfortable. But Jack didn’t agree with our plan, so there you go.”
