Eurobond Improves His Record To 10-For-13 At Remington Park

Jockey Ramon Vazquez leads Eurobond to his 10th win in 13 starts at Remington Park

Two years ago, Eurobond was unbeatable at Remington Park, winning all five starts and being named Champion Sprinter of the Meet.

This 6-year-old gelding is returning to form in 2019 after a year off, winning for the third time in a row and the 10th time in 13 starts at this Oklahoma City track, taking a 5-1/2 furlongs sprint against $25,000 claimers.

Eurobond was the last horse to beat Welder, Oklahoma’s 2018 Horse of the Year, Horse of the Meet and Champion Sprinter, and favorite to repeat as Horse of the Meet with four wins this year. They faced off Oct. 20, 2017 and Eurobond got the best of him, winning the Oklahoma Classics Sprint by 1-1/4 lengths over Welder. Since then, Welder has won nine races in a row at Remington Park, becoming the first horse in track history to win four stakes races in one meet in 2018, and now approaching the all-time win streak of Slide Show, who won 11 races in a row at Remington Park.

Granted, Eurobond has been racing at a lesser class level than he did when he was Champion Sprinter, but the one thing you can’t take from this horse is he still has the heart to win. On Saturday night, he went wire to wire, setting fractions of 22.43 seconds for the first quarter, 45.89 for the half and 57.75 for five-eighths before stopping the timer in 1 minute, 4.08 seconds.

This was one of the best claims of the past three years at Remington Park. All-time winningest owner here, Danny Caldwell of Poteau, Okla., got him for a song, $17,500 in a claiming race on Sept. 1, 2017. He has won 8-of-11 starts since then, stepping up in class and getting the job done for trainer Federico Villafranco. Jockey Ramon Vazquez was in the saddle for the win. Eurobond was claimed by Caldwell from James Helzer, who was the owner-trainer-breeder at the time.

Eurobond won $17,442 on Saturday night from the purse of $26,902 and improved his lifetime record to 20 starts, 11 wins, and two seconds for $326,173 in his bankroll. At Remington Park, the son of Euroears, out of the Elusive Quality mare Cabo Sunrise, has now won $293,945 lifetime.

He drew away at the end of the race to win by 4-3/4 lengths over Louden’s Gray, who was another 1-3/4 lengths ahead of third-place finisher Texas Long Bow. Eurobond went off at 1-9 odds and paid $2.20 to win, $2.10 to place and $2.10 to show.
