  • The official Euro 2020 song, titled ‘We Are The People’, have been revealed
  • DJ Martin Garrix has partnered with U2 stars Bono and The Edge for the anthem
  • But fans were unimpressed by the song as they quizzed UEFA over tickets

UEFA have revealed their official song for Euro 2020, with DJ Martin Garrix teaming up with U2 stars Bono and The Edge for their anthem We Are The People.

Major tournaments are defined by their songs – Shakira’s ‘Waka Waka’ for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa was a memorable hit ahead of that tournament, and organisers will be hoping this song is successful in promoting the Europe-wide edition of the summer competition.

Garrix said he was ‘very proud’ of his collaboration with the world famous Irish band, admitting he was ‘a huge football fan’ – saying he was excited for what promises to be ‘the biggest Euro in history’.

‘Creating the music for one of the biggest sports events in the world together with Bono and The Edge has been an incredible experience,’ he said. ‘I’m very proud of what we did together and excited to finally share it with the world!

‘Music is my passion, but I’m also a huge football fan, so it’s extra special for me to be able to create the official song for what will be the biggest Euro in history.’

The music video shows the trio performing in London overlooking the skyline, with the tournament’s semi-finals and final set to be hosted at Wembley Stadium.

The national stadium will also host a handful of group and knockout games, with England given a huge opportunity to succeed on home turf. They will play all their group games against Croatia, Scotland and Czech Republic at Wembley.

But the reaction to UEFA’s new song didn’t go down too well – with fans left unimpressed and instead quesioning the organisation about the situation regarding tickets to watch the games.

The ongoing uncertainty around Euro 2020 due to Covid-19 concerns has raised doubts over how many fans will be let in – with officials in talks with governments across the continent attempting to establish the capacity that can be expected.

The concept for the competition was to hold games across 12 cities, although Dublin have already lost their right to host games after failing to guarantee they could allow spectators at games in the Aviva Stadium.

One fan angrily wrote on Twitter in reply to UEFA: ‘Bono and Martin Garrix can go and suck eggs as far as I’m concerned. When will we find out whether our tickets are still valid??!?’

Another supporter said the title of the song was ‘ironic’, adding: ‘How ironic with over 80 per cent of tickets allocated to corporates and sponsors and the loyal fans who follow their country to far flung places and spend hundreds every year get shafted with tiny allocations.’

‘Who gives a clart? Let us know about tickets,’ read another tweet, while one user added: ‘We don’t care about Bono. Any chance off hearing about tickets?’

Euro 2020 is set to kick off on June 11, with Turkey vs Italy getting things underway in Rome as the tournament opener.

England’s first game will be against Croatia at Wembley on June 13, with Scotland taking on the Czech Republic the following day.
