England qualify for Euro 2020 knockout stages

Why is this the case?

Ukraine ended up in third place on Monday after losing to Austria, while Finland finished third in Group B with their loss to Belgium.

That means at least two of the third-placed sides are guaranteed to finish on three points. It means that even if England lose to the Czech Republic and end up third in their group, they will have enough points to be one of the four best performing third-placed sides.

Doing so is enough to get into the last-16 of the competition.

England cannot come below third place as Scotland, in third, and Croatia, in fourth, play each other on Tuesday night. That means at least one will have a maximum of two points, or as few as one, depending on the result.

Who else does this apply to?

Switzerland have finished third in Group A with four points, so are now through.

The Czech Republic, Sweden and France are also all guaranteed to go through even if they are bumped down to third on their final match days.

Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands have also qualified for the last-16 by winning their groups, while Wales, Denmark and Austria have gone through in second.
