‘End this thing or I’m going to die’: Behind the scenes of NHL’s longest games


Marty Turco had a routine down for quadruple overtime games.

After the third OT, he’d get hooked up to an IV. Too bad the intravenous infusion couldn’t do anything for heartbreak, which was inevitable after he was the losing goaltender in two of the longest Stanley Cup Playoff games in NHL history (2003 five-overtime game against Ducks, 2007 quadruple overtime against Vancouver). So when Turco and his Dallas Stars were heading to their fourth overtime against the Sharks in Game 6 of the 2008 playoffs, he had enough. The Stars had blown a 3-0 series lead, and with another loss would be staring at a Game 7 in San Jose.

His wife, Kelly, was pregnant with their son, Finley, uncomfortably standing all game in the stands at the American Airlines Center.

“I’m like, ‘Someone better f’in score,” Turco recalled. “Or I’m going to kill somebody.”
