Emotional Andy Murray in tears as he celebrates European Open win over Stan Wawrinka

Andy Murray broke down in tears as he won his first ATP Final title since March 2017.

The Scot has battled back from hip surgery and a host of injury setbacks to taste glory once more.

He edged Stan Wawrinka 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 to win the tournament in Antwerp in what has been a memorable week of action.

His wife is back home and is currently expecting their third child.

“I didn’t expect to be in this position, so I feel very lucky,” said an emotional Murray, speaking to Amazon Prime Video.

“It means a lot. The last few years have been extremely difficult.

“I didn’t expect to be in this position at all. I’m happy, very happy.”

Murray nearly quit the sport at the start of the year when he announced that the Australian Open could be his last major.

Wawrinka also revealed his delight like most tennis fans, at seeing Murray return to the top of his game.

“To see you back at this level, it’s amazing,” the Swiss said.

“We’re all really happy. I’m sad I lost today but I’m really happy to see you back.”

He was planning to play at Wimbledon before calling time on his career, but he missed that and continued to soldier on.

“I’ve pretty much done everything that I could to try and get my hip feeling better and it hasn’t helped loads,” an emotional Murray said in January.

“I’m in a better place than I was six months ago but still in a lot of pain. It’s been tough.”

Murray was beaten in the first round in Melbourne at the start of the year, with his career hanging by a thread.

He added before the tournament: “During my training block I spoke to my team and told them I can’t keep doing this. I needed to have an end point because I was sort of playing with no idea when the pain was going to stop.

“I said to my team, look I think I can get through this until Wimbledon. That’s where I’d like to stop playing. But I’m also not certain I’m able to do that.”
