Elliot Page and His Wife Emma Portner Are Getting Divorced

Umbrella Academy star Elliot Page and his wife Emma Portner have announced that they are filing for divorce after three years of marriage.

“After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce following our separation last summer,” the pair wrote in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter Tuesday. “We have the utmost respect for each other and remain close friends.”

Page married Portner, a dancer and choreographer, in early 2018. It was not previously known that the two had separated.

The decision comes months after Page published a heartfelt open letter coming out as transgender and nonbinary in December 2020. “I can’t begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self,” he wrote in the note.

Afterwards, Portner expressed her support for Page in a public statement of her own. “Trans, queer and non-binary people are a gift to this world,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “I also ask for patience & privacy, but that you join me in the fervent support of trans life every single day. Elliot’s existence is a gift in and of itself. Shine on, sweet E. Love you so much.”

But after Page’s announcement sparked some followers to speculate about how Portner might identify, the 26-year-old choreographer issued a follow-up statement on her Instagram stories, writing, “My gender identity, pronouns, and sexuality are private and not up for debate.” She added that she would like for the “energy in discussion over my identity to shift into addressing the climate crisis or sharing resources to support LGBTQIA2+… resiliency instead.”

In a December 2018 interview with them., Portner has previously discussed how her relationship with Page has inspired her work. “I’m much softer now and able to express intimacy more genuinely in my art,” she said at the time. “Elliot and I have an indefatigable connection and this undying desire to be near each other. It cannot ever be perfect, but we really respect each other. Love can’t flow without respect.”
