Einride Adds Appliance Giant To Its EV Transport Roster

Swedish appliance giant Electrolux AB will soon transport products in its home nation in electric Einride transport vehicles and eventually in self-driving EV provided by the tech transport company. The two Swedish companies announced an agreement today for the world’s second biggest appliance company to start delivering its wares in Sweden beginning the second quarter of this year with the ultimate goal of using the zero emission vehicles globally.

Two of the key objectives for Electrolux are to reduce the environmental impact of its transport fleet while improving efficiency and cutting costs.

“Sustainability is central for us at Electrolux, and we have a strong interest in reducing our impact in every facet of the business, especially transport,” said Anders Linnarsson, Head of Electrolux Logistics AB, in a statement. “By partnering with Einride to introduce electric, and with an ambition to add autonomous, technology to our supply chain, we’re staying ahead of the curve for the short- and long-term.

For Einride partnering with Electrolux expands its reach into another segment of consumer goods. Last May Swedish vegan food giant Oatly agreed to transition to Einride electric transport trucks to deliver its products to food stores. Einride also has a similar deal with German food store chain Lidl.

Einride chief commercial officer Jonas Hernlund says this newest partnership with Electrolux continues his company’s quest to build its business through relationships with other company’s that are equally concerned about preserving and improving the environment.

“To further develop and scale our groundbreaking freight mobility solutions, it is crucial to partner with like-minded organizations, those that hold sustainability and technological development as core values,” said Hernlund in a statement. “Electrolux has a long history of improving our home lives and we look forward to driving the change to a better future of freight together.”

In their joint statement, the companies predicted Electrolux’s move to using Einride electric transports “Will, within the first three years, save hundreds of tonnes of CO2, compared to diesel freight.”

Einride tells Forbes.com that with other customers, there has been “over a 90% reduction in equivalent CO2 emissions compared to diesel and driven over 80,000 electric km so far.”

The arrangement with Electrolux will start small, with just one electric transport vehicle covering one route in central Sweden, but the companies say that will rapidly expand to additional routes and vehicles “as soon as possible.”

In the next two-to-three years Electrolux hopes to further automate its product transport operation with Einride’s autonomous electronic transport vehicle called the Pod. The appliance company says such a move with help it reach its goal of a climate neutral value chain by 2050 “or much sooner.”

To further improve efficiency for its clients, all vehicles are The trucks are equipped with Einride’s control and monitoring software and connected to the company’s freight mobility platform which includes dedicated shipper and carrier portals with real time updates and detailed sustainability reporting. The autonomous electric Pods can be managed by an operator from a remote location.

The companies declined to disclose the value of their partnership but a spokesperson hinted the relationship could grow saying, “this is a first step to a much more comprehensive global partnership in electrification and automation.”
