Eid al-Adha, sometimes also spelt Eid ul-Adha, the second Islamic holiday, starts on Sunday, June 16.

The major festival occurs around two months after Eid al-Fitr, which celebrates the end of the Holy month of Ramadan, when many Muslims fast.

Eid al-Adha is celebrated just over two months later – it means ‘feast of the sacrifice’ and takes place at the end of the period of time when Muslims perform the Haji pilgrimage.

This five-day journey takes people to Mecca in Saudi Arabia, the holiest city in Islam. All Muslims who are able have to complete Hajj at least once in their life.

Eid al-Adha is celebrated for three days ending on Tuesday, 18 June. It’s a time during which Muslims come together to worship, and celebrate.

As the holiday continues, here’s a list of wishes, prayers, Quran quotes and poems to mark the occasion.
