EFL reject prospective takeover of Wigan Athletic

What happened?

A Spanish consortium has been attempting to takeover the struggling League One side since September.

They were granted additional time to complete their purchase of the club, and had their “exclusivity period” extended twice.

The EFL met again on Thursday to discuss the merits of the bid.

It’s understood the current bidders still have an exclusivity period that lasts for another seven days. It is also thought there are other interested parties.

What has the EFL said?

The EFL statement read: “At its meeting on Thursday, the EFL Board received an update and fully considered the latest position in respect of the ongoing discussions relating to the sale of Wigan Athletic.

“The EFL has in recent weeks undertaken significant due diligence on the relevant parties in accordance with its Regulations and, based on the information that has been made available, the Board confirmed it was not in a position to agree to an application to transfer membership in the EFL to the proposed purchasers as the League’s requirements have not been satisfied.

“The Board reiterated its commitment to working with the Administrators to secure a successful and sustainable future for the Club and will meet with them to discuss the implications of this decision at the earliest opportunity.

What has been going on at Wigan?

The club were placed into administration on 1 July and the subsequent 12-point deduction saw them relegated from the Championship on the final day of the 2019-20 season.

Since then, Wigan have seen a number of players and staff depart, including former manager Paul Cook.

John Sheridan joined the club as manager in September but left for fellow League One strugglers Swindon after just 15 games in charge.
