The Wade family has been known to blow up the internet. Each is a star in their own right: Dwyane is a potential future Hall of Fame basketball player. Gabrielle is a celebrated actor and genuinely hilarious presence on social media. Zaire is shaping up to be a great basketball player like his dad. And then there’s Zaya — an icon, fashionista, and precocious young lady who’s helped teach countless parents across the country how to treat their trans children.
Now, the Wades’ 12-year-old daughter has apparently added social media maven to her growing repertoire of gifts. With an assist from her dad, Zaya is making waves with a couple of new TikToks that find her and her old man sporting a pair of eye-catchingly vibrant hair styles.
In February, Dwyane made headlines when he discussed the moment Zaya came out to him as trans. “Once Zaya came home and said, ‘Call me Zaya,’ and ‘I’m ready to take on this,’ I looked at her and said, ‘You are a leader. It’s our opportunity to allow you to be a voice,’” he said.
Zaya, it turns out, is a leader beyond helping her family learn, appreciate, and affirm the LGBTQ+ community. She has also inspired her dad’s latest, and arguably boldest, stylistic choice to date.
For the most part, the internet can’t get enough. And for every transphobe tweeting hateful messages toward the Wade family, there are more users defending Dwyane, Gabrielle, and Zaya for living proudly as the affirming family they are.
