Public Protection Cabinet Secretary K. Gail Russell announced that Bruce A. Howard DVM will be acting as Interim Equine Medical Director for the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC), effective immediately.
Dr. Howard has served as Chief Racing Veterinarian of the KHRC since 2016, where his responsibilities included oversight of racetrack veterinarians and equine medical regulation compliance. “Dr. Howard’s extensive knowledge and experience within the sport makes him an ideal Interim Equine Medical Director,” said Secretary Gail Russell.
Dr. Howard obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1980 and received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1989. Before joining the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission in 2013, Dr. Howard worked as a thoroughbred assistant trainer, broodmare manager, veterinary assistant and ambulatory veterinarian. “The Commission has found an outstanding Interim director in Dr. Howard,” said KHRC executive director Marc Guilfoil.
Dr. Howard will serve as Interim Equine Medical Director in addition to his responsibilities as Chief Racing Veterinarian while the commission searches for a permanent successor.
“I am honored to continue to serve the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission as both Chief Racing Veterinarian and Interim Equine Medical Director, “said Dr. Howard. “The Commission has demonstrated a clear commitment to prioritizing the health and safety of horses at Commonwealth tracks, and I look forward to continuing to support the commission’s efforts.”
