The San Jose Sharks announced on Friday evening that general manager Doug Wilson will be taking a temporary medical leave from his day-to-day duties in running the team.
In the interim, Sharks assistant general manager Joe Will will assume Wilson’s duties as it pertains to day-to-day team operations.
No further details were given.
The temporary nature of Wilson’s medical leave does seem to indicate that, at least at the moment, the intention is for Wilson to return to his role once he is able to.
Wilson has been the general manager and executive vice president of hockey operations for the Sharks since 2003, making him one of the longest-tenured executives in the entire NHL. Prior to his time on the management side of things, Wilson enjoyed an extremely successful NHL career as a defenceman, logging over 1,000 games for the Sharks and Chicago Blackhawks and finishing with a whopping 827 career points. He currently holds the record for most points and goals ever scored by a Blackhawks defenceman.
